The Afrikaans Language Institute is a cultural and educational initiative devoted to promoting the Afrikaans language and the heritage of Afrikaners around the world. Founded on the belief that language is the key to understanding identity, history, and human connection, the Afrikaans Institute offers high-quality resources for free to all who wish to master Afrikaans or reconnect with their cultural roots.
At the core of the Institute is a passionate team of Afrikaans language educators and content creators who combine academic rigor with real-life teaching experience and a genuine love for the Afrikaans linguistic tradition.
We are proud to offer a carefully structured Afrikaans Language Master Course that integrates Grammar, Vocabulary, Audio Podcasts, Exercises, and Cultural insights. This course is the fruit of years of dedication and feedback from learners globally. MARLI
Marli is a marketing professional from Stellenbosch, a town known for its Cape Dutch architecture, vineyards, and rich Afrikaans cultural life. After a degree in Languages, she moved from classrooms to newsrooms, building style guides, commissioning features, and leading cross-functional edits for multilingual audiences.
She loves exploring Afrikaner gastronomy and often prepares traditional recipes like bobotie and melktert in her kitchen (see our Culture section for more). She is also a language enthusiast who currently speaks three languages fluently and enjoys sharing techniques with fellow learners. When she is not contributing to the website, she likes spending her time with family and friends, especially at local markets and cultural festivals.
HENDRIK
Hendrik is a software engineer from Pretoria, with a passion for technology and sharing Afrikaner culture online. He also enjoys Afrikaans folk music and spending time outdoors in the beautiful landscapes of South Africa, from the Magaliesberg mountains to the wide open spaces of the Karoo.
What more can we say? We would describe him as a friendly guy who enjoys discussing current affairs and exchanging ideas with others. After work, you will often find him enjoying a cup of coffee at a local café while reading the latest news on his phone or planning his next weekend adventure.
ANNELIE
With a sharp eye for strategy and a deep love for all things Afrikaans, she is the digital voice behind our mission. Armed with a background in digital communication and audience engagement, she leads our outreach efforts.
Passionate about the evolving story of the Afrikaans-speaking community, she brings lesser-known aspects of Afrikaner culture into the spotlight, highlighting traditions, local stories, creative talent, and moments of heritage that deserve to be preserved and celebrated. From cultural festivals and historical figures to contemporary voices shaping the future, she enjoys sharing the richness and diversity of Afrikaans culture with a wider audience.

WILLEM
Born in Pretoria and raised on a steady diet of Afrikaans literature, music and community, Willem has always viewed language as more than just rules—it is a living, breathing expression of his identity and culture. After earning his degree in Languages, he spent several years teaching to international students and creating educational content for language learning platforms.
Now a Language Content Developer on our team, Willem brings together academic rigor and a love for spoken, everyday Afrikaans. He is particularly passionate about preserving the richness of Afrikaans while making it accessible to learners from around the world. When he is not writing or editing, you will likely find him browsing second-hand bookshops, looking for hidden gems.
ELIZE
Born in a country where tradition and modern life constantly intersect and sometimes clash, she developed over time a deep appreciation for her Afrikaans culture—and found her purpose through preserving its language. With her degree in sociolinguistics, she wants to make Afrikaans more accessible, considering the lack of reliable learning materials and contents.
Outside of language teaching, she enjoys spending time outdoors and making the most of South Africa’s diverse landscapes. From hiking mountain trails and exploring nature reserves to spending weekends by the coast with her trusted camera, she loves capturing breathtaking photographs of the country's natural beauty.
RUAN
Ruan was born in the United States, in a multicultural neighborhood in New York. Though his roots were Afrikaner—his grandparents having emigrated from South Africa—he grew up hearing only bits and pieces of Afrikaans at home. What began as a vague curiosity about his family’s heritage gradually developed into a lifelong passion for the Afrikaans language and the culture that surrounds it.
Determined to reconnect with his family's linguistic roots, he immersed himself in Afrikaans history, music, literature. Over time, he discovered that learning the language opened a window into a rich culture that changed his perception of himself and the world. He hopes that his lessons and contents will also inspire you to learn Afrikaans and visit South Africa!
